Hi everyone! Thanks for tuning in – super advanced notice on this one. Click the reminder button and think of ideas for the anime opening!
The studio D’ART SHTAJIO is quite reputable and we’ll be working with Toon Boom Animation software! See you soon! -john
I feel like the only in japan really needs to stay i really like it tbh and others for sure do as well 😀
I gotta be super honest about this because I care, I hope it doesn’t anger or offend anyone involved.
I think there is a huge value in getting an anime studio like that to build an opening, logos, graphical elements, even though I don’t really think the current one needs replacement or anything like that. It’s… fine the way it is. Short and sweet. I do understand why John is trying to renew it and make something more definitive, but you gotta be super careful there. You might be trading an iconic opening for something that is not too representative of the channel itself, even if it comes out wonderful, which I have no doubts a studio like that would be able to produce.
To be absolutely frank and kinda harsh I guess, at least for me it doesn’t seem like John knows much or is very interested in anime himself. Perhaps I’m wrong here, but at least from the stuff I’ve seen, John seemed a bit disconnected from the entire modern manga and anime scene. There have been some… half a dozen episodes that were in some way, shape or form related to animes and mangas. A manga museum, a japanese anime studio, manga cafe, something about gatchapon and figures, etc. But in several of those he just plain admitted that he didn’t know much about the stuff there. Stuff that are exploding internationally in the japanese animation fan crowd. 😛
Which is fine obviously, you don’t have to be an otaku to make videos about Japan. I mean, one of the reasons why I watch John is for this different perspective he presents after all. It tends to be a channel that is more centered, in my perspective, around current everyday life real Japan with less pop culture influences. It goes more around cultural curiosities, food, travel, places to visit that you might not have known about, and real Japan rather than an imagined one. It’s not the same mood, style, perspective and view as anime. In a similar way, it’s why I watch stuff like Japanology, Life Where I’m From, among a few other channels.
What I mean though is that perhaps working with an animation studio, even if it’s indie and by non-japanese people, might result in an expectation for the channel that it might not attend, nor want to attend. Or that just doesn’t represent the content as much as it could. It’d be kinda odd, like it was forced in there just because. You watch an anime opening expecting the channel to be highly influenced, focused in and connected to anime, but it’s not.
I have a feeling, and I might be totally wrong on this, that Only in Japan channel attracts more a crowd that is interested in real Japan as a country rather than anime Japan, even though I’m an otaku myself. I’m not sure if there’s a huge divide between both crowds, probably not too much, but there is still kind of a difference there.
And probably I’m reading too much into this, without reason to. But it is something to take in consideration. John will ultimately decide what’s best for the channel, but if I personally had to choose an opening and a proper representation for the channel, it’d have to be a collage of the best videos and best collabs in real settings. Unless John is trying to actively get attention and steer the content more towards that area, because it will end up attracting that crowd. An opening is, after all, supposed to represent the channel and content.
It’s hard even for myself to reach this conclusion. Like I said, I’m a huge fan of anime. I have been watching and following japanese animation and manga for over 20 years now. I’d risk saying that I have watched anime and read manga way more than the average fan… still do. And still, I’m not sure if an anime opening would fit well for Only in Japan. Because it doesn’t represent what I expect from the channel I guess. I’m judging too much before even seeing it, and don’t take my long comment as a sign of intensity… I just like to ramble a lot, that’s all.
One way or another, I hope it goes well. And outside all that, I’m really glad to see a studio like that prospering in Japan… I imagine it’s pretty hard to conquer space in what appears to be such a closed off space for foreigners. o/

Try to include a hitchhiker image and of course near the end a marriage image. With something showing or leading to the future
So what, you and Peter are no best friends any more? Did YT streaming destroy your friendship?
Make John a bobble head with his hat. Riding on one of those computerized japense toilets
Very inspiring and informative video, will check out Toonboom.
You could try making the logo a neon sign or something along those lines.
Hey John, upgrading the intro is a great idea, My Personal opinion is to keep Peter’s Voice, that is a Classic Touch, another things to include, Your Hat, space boat, Okapi, Gachapon, Cherry Blossom, food. vending machines, and do not forget Man Hole.
