If they are pronounced the same exact way as hiragana, then why bother with a whole new alphabet? I guess to recognize how foreign it is on sight?

Hi! New subscriber, I like how you explain things, I will be continuing.
I was following along when you said the katakana is used to indicate words borrowed from other languages or words not native to Japan. But then you used examples like tea and water which I know in Japanese as ocha and mizu.
So I’m kind of confused.
I am going to be starting college bachelors for Japanese culture and language as my major in the spring. I know I have a lot I need to study before my courses start. I hope this video series and some of my other lessons can help me get a small start before then!!!! Thank you so much for posting this series.
